Polyculture of Tilapia and Ulang in Ponds Part 2

Water Quality Monitoring

Monitor water parameters weekly to ensure fast growth and survival of the cultured species, by using available instruments or conventional methods. Make sure that all parameters primarily D.O., temperature, pH, ammonia levels, Secchi disc visibility, etc. are on the optimum range.

Optimum Water Quality Parameters

  • Water Depth : 1-2 meters
  • Dissolved Oxygen : 5 ppm
  • pH : 6.5 to 8.5
  • Temperature : 25-31 °C
  • Transparency : 25-40 cm
  • Unionized Ammonia: <0.02 mg/L

Feeding

Ulang PL can be fed with prawn fry mash at a rate of 10 to 20% biomass at night while tilapia can be fed with floating feeds at a rate of 3 to 5% biomass during daytime. Stock sampling can be done every 15 days for feed adjustment and monitoring. A lift net (bintol) can be use for ulang juvenile sampling.

For the first month of culture, tilapia fingerlings will rely mainly on the natural food of the pond brought about by weekly fertilization dressing. Feeding will be given on the second month of culture with initial of 5% feeding rate, then 3% on the later month.

Harvesting

Drain the pond to the half-level mark the night before harvesting. Use seine net for catching- Drain the pond completely and handpick the remaining fishes, which burrow themselves in the mud.

  • Fertilization Rate:
    • Ammonium Phosphate: 200 kg/mo
    • Probiotics: 5 kg/culture
    • Lime: 1000 kg/ha/run

Target Production:

  • Ulang:600 kg
  • Tilapia: 2,125 kg

Prices:

  • Ulang PL: P1.50
  • Tilapia fingerlings: P0.30
  • Ulang Market size: P280/kilo
  • Tilapia Market size: P50/kilo

A. Production Costs

B. Operating Costs

Total Project Cost

  • Production cost: P176,200
  • Operation Expenses: P40,150
  • Total: P218,350

Gross Income

  • For Tilapia: 2,125 kg x P50 = P106,250
  • For Ulang: 600 kg x P280 = P168,000
  • Total: P274,250

Net Income

  • Gross income – Total Income = P57,900

Return of Investment

  • Net Income/Total Project Cost = 21% (P57,900/P274.250)
