Designing a Rustic Garden

A rustic garden depicts sights and scenes in the countryside – vast fields, big stones, implements made of wood or stones, and big plants.

A rustic design simulates a provincial setting, that is why big trees and wild plants and flowers that grow wild on the wayside are often used by landscape artists. Accents made of wood or terra cotta are also used.

Plants commonly used in a rustic garden design are the following:

  1. Tree: cordyline ti plan, fiscus benjamina, podocarpus, acacia
  2. Shrub: bromeliads, silver wall, white phiopogon, deliciosa, san francisco, yellow toothpick, Chinese holly, gumamela, yellow and violet lantana, mandine, jasmine, heliconias, Boston fern, yellow ginger, etc.
  3. Hedge: yellow vine, yellow bell, variegated duranta, casmis vine and bouganvilla
  4. Ground cover: mayama, creeping charlie, red and white wandering jew, etc.

Guidelines for Designing an Oriental Garden

  1. Use plants that have green leaves like the Japanese bamboo, podo carpus, ferns, bushida, buddha bamboo, Chinese holly, creeping juniper and cypress. It is also good to use bonsai as accents.
  2. Put an oriental fountain or sukubai and a pond.
  3. Put a walkway that is made of flat large stones, white stones or green slates.
  4. Put decorations like Japanese lanterns, jars and sculptures.

The following decorations and accents are commonly used:

  • driftwood
  • boulders
  • native rice grinder
  • horse-drawn cart
  • a pig’s feeding trough
  • iron cooking vat
  • terra cotta jars
  • sculptures or precast figurines of dwarfs, eagles, etc.
  • antique statues
  • statues of saints
  • bamboo fences
  • grotto
  • cascades made of bamboo
  • railway for the garden pathway

There are a lot more decorative objects and accessories once can use – it all depends on the landscaper’s creativity to create the ambiance of a rustic scene in a garden.

Designing an Indoor Garden

Indoor or rooftop landscaping is not a kind of design but a way to implement a design. The previously mentioned designs can all be used in an indoor garden. Here are some points to be considered in indoor landscaping:

  1. Use plants that grow bes in shady areas.
  2. Place plants according to their need of minimum sunlight.
  3. If there is no natural source of light, use artificial lights from electric bulbs or fluorescent lamps.
  4. Indoor gardens are best for buildings where the wall are made of glass and a skylight is available. These must also be present in houses with indoor gardens.
  5. Big trees can be used in the area is wide and has a high ceiling.

Plants usually used for indoor gardening

A good number of plants are usually preferred for landscaping indoor gardens, because they thrive in half-shaded areas. Some of these are as follows:

  • Japanese bamboo
  • podocarpus
  • rhapis
  • red princess
  • Fiscus benjamina
  • candletop
  • palmera
  • octopus shrub

Ponds and small waterfalls can be added in an indoor garden or even a rooftop garden depending on the size of the area.
