The Technology Resource Center (TRC) is set to provide special livelihood assistance for the multitude of overseas Filipino workers (OFW) on voluntary repatriation from troubled countries in the Middle East through the Tulong Kababayan program initiated by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).
TRC Director General Dennis L. Cunanan said the program is intended to open doors of new opportunities to OFW’s affected by the conflicts in the Middle East. Given the proper training and assistance, Cunanan said hard-working OFWs can easily retool themselves and become effective entrepreneurs.
DG Cunanan said TRC’s business packages for the displaced migrant workers shall include an entrepreneurship counseling session to help them identify the kind of business they would likely succeed in. Following this is an intensive 2-day hands-on training on setting-up the business. He added beneficiaries shall also be provided with “trial business kits” to help speed up their training and gain first hand experience. The next stage would be the business planning course, which shall guide them on how to work out an effective business plan, source it’s funding, and have it registered. After the training, Cunanan said the beneficiaries will be given a business start-up kit and shall be provided with an extended mentoring assistance package.
OFWs who are qualified for the program can avail of TRC various hands-on livelihood trainings such as production of flavored and fortified juice, layer (table egg) production, manufacture of fashion accessories, herbal bath soap, perfumes and colognes, among others. Those who are management-oriented can also avail of other trainings such as a business operation, event planning and management, setting up a domestic ticketing office for airlines and shipping companies, bakery management, and others.
