A. Seed Production

Catfish is locally known as hito to Tagalogs, paltat to Ilocanos, pantat to Cebuanos and Ilonggos, and ito to Pampangenos. It is one of the most important freshwater food fishes not only in the Philippines, but in the whole of Southeast Asia. Catfish culture requires less area, can tolerate poor water quality, as well as high density stocking. In addition, disease occurrence in catfish has not been a significant problem so far.

Technology Profile

Catfish broodstock can be obtained from lakes, rivers and other freshwater bodies. It can be stocked in earthen ponds or in concrete tanks with mud at the bottom. Catfish mature in about 6-8 months. Breeding season varies but usually starts in May.

Hi! Thanks and more power!

I am happy that you are happy with your operations. I have seen the operations of Mr. Greg Domingo in Davao and Mr. Mel Domingo in Isabela. I have also been into commercial aquaculture business for the past 30 years.
All I’m saying is, their production can still be improved a hundred or even a thousand times more with little refinements in technique to achieve sufficiency in fingerlings supply. I cannot perceive how you can disagree with me on this ground.

Ah Is this another case of theoretical knowledge versus someone who has the experience ?

I’ll always go for the one with the experience. I’m with you Ms. Domingo. We’ve met before and will vouch and support what you say.

    • Abe says:

Same with Davao, local farmers here in our place use only Pituitary glands and they have been doing it many years now with great success. The reason why I would disagre with Jom that this is unreliable. I will side with Gerry to go for the one with experience..
Although, experience with theoritical knowledge would have great advantage.

I remember long ago when I had a training in SEAFDEC , there were experts from different countries (USA, Japan, Malaysia) who were considered scientist in the field of aquaculture who taught us the methods of hatching. As expected we have a strict protocol and parameters to follow (things like monitoring of temperature, salinity, pH, time, water flow, right amount of chemicals/hormones use, etc.) However, the hatching rate attained by they so called experts did surpassed the performance achieved by those aides/workers of SEAFDEC who didnt even graduated in high school and they did their hatching jobs using their five senses and to think that they did in that in between their game of chess.

I believe in the success of Ms. Domingo and their farm.

“This is the reason why in Davao, a post fry sized fingerlings (about inch) still costs P1.00 each. It should be noted that when this size is marketed to growers, a very low recovery rate is realized.”

I disagree again with these statement from Jom that a small fry when distributed to farmers have a very low recovery. We bought fry from Domingo hatchery at P2/pc. and travel it for 6 hours by bus and we still almost 100% recovery after stocking. Only 4 pcs. dead out of 5,000 pcs.

Anyway, Thanks Jom, Honeylette and Gerry… most to Leo this is a very informative forum site. You guys please keep on posting..

  15. Honeylette Domingo says:

I am a local catfish producer here in Davao City. I do artificail spawning of Clarias gariepinus in a very simple way, easily understandable by our local farmers. So far, most farmers who benefited my technology are already producers and supported their own seed requirements. Maybe, this web can publish a simplier method so interested farmers who rely on reading techno transfers like this may easily digest what is being instructed here without undergoing further skills training.
The farmers could be taught a simple way of restraining the the fish without using aenesthetics and other hormones. I dessiminated techno transfer on the management and approach of catfish culture thru the coordination of BFAR XI since 1999.

    • Jom says:

Asian catfish or the native catfish is the Clarias macrocephalus and is different from the african catfish which is the Clarias gariepinus.

The procedure presented here by SEAFDEC is based on the science aquaculture and is meant to produce commercial volumes of fry, fingerlings and marketable sized fish. It is simple enough and the only reason why it looks complicated is because data are presented as well.

Of course there are options for the commercial producers as well and this includes the use of the pituitary gland of the male hito and the use of anesthetics.

The use of the Pituitary gland of the male hito is unreliable. It results to only 30-60% chance of full spawning. On the other hand, the use of the commercial hormone can produce as much as 100% full spawning.

Anesthetics is indeed optional. It may not be used at all.

Commercial volumes of hito fry, fingerlings and marketable sized fish production remains to be a big problem
in our country. This is the reason why in Davao, a post fry sized fingerlings (about inch) still costs P1.00 each. It should be noted that when this size is marketed to growers, a very low recovery rate is realized.

If Ms Domingo has been teaching backyard growers through BFAR XI how to produce hito properly since 1999, there should be enough production to bring down the cost of 3 inches fingerlings to P0.50 each in Davao by now for the benefit of the local growers.
      Jom
      Jom

      • Honeylette Domingo says:

I think it’s impossible to sell 3 inches at P0.50 this time since anywhere else in Mindanao, there is no such price at that size even in Luzon. One local farmer from Calinan, is selling that size at P5.00 each. Fry ponds here are designed only for backyard sizes, not on commercial based. The farmer-producers are no longer buying seeds from other breeding farms. That’s better than buying seed at all. There are specific places in Davao City that are capable of giving good yields of fingerlings, the problem is, the growers are rising in number. The supply has always run short. The supply and demand of seeds and marketable sizes now become imbalanced. The raisers prefer supplying their own farms first rather than disposing to other growers, because they have increased their volumes too, reflecting the increasing number of consumer per se.

The concentration of fingerling production in Davao City is based in Los Amigos, Tugbok. Almost all growers in Purok 3 who were once backyard growers are now hatchery operators themselves. They are mainly using spring, freshwater for the entire hatching operation. The quality of water is one factor that helps the farmers produce their own seeds compared to farmers from other neighbouring provinces in Davao who underwent trainings also thru BFAR. The short supply of seeds worsen after the flashfloods in July last year hence raisers are scamping all around to avail fingerlings by priority reservations from the local hatcheries.

        • Jom says:

          Hi,
That is precisely my point. Efficiency in production. While everybody has been producing fingerlings, there is still lack of supply of fingerlings as evidenced by its high selling price.

One backyard hatchery can easily produce 1 million fingerlings a month with a more scientific technique. I guess BFAR region XI will have to learn it better.
