Technology for Making Coco Methyl Ester (CME) Or Biodiesel

This technology was designed to be appropriate and viable for the rural setting where coconut is grown in abundance. A plant showcasing the viability of producing CME was set-up in Brgy. Anahaw, Odiongan town in the province of Romblon.
Inaugurated on May 13, 2005 the highlights of the plant are: A rated capacity of 1000 liters CME per day; production floor area of 450 sq m.; equipment cost of PhP 4M or US$75,471.70 (based on 2005 exchange rate), all equipment are locally fabricated and requires 8 direct workers. Product quality conforms with BPS set standards for biodiesel with a glycerin content of 0.2% min. Raw Materials are copra or crude coconut oil.
In November 2005, a sequential batch reactor wastewater treatment facility was built. The system, estimated to cost PhP 200,000.00 was designed to treat the plant’s wastewater output at the rate of 5 cu.m. per day. It is expected to be operational by April 2006. Inclusion of this facility was deemed essential to further boost the competitiveness of the CME technology.
Portable Bio-Digester
The Industrial Technology Development Institute of the Department of Science & Technology (ITDI-DOST) launched its portable biogas digester last February 8, 2007 at the Environmental Division Bldg. The simple launching ceremony was graced by no less than the DOST Secretary Honorable ESTRELLA F. ALABASTRO, ITDI Director DR. NUNA E. ALMANZOR, personalities from the MMDA, LGUs, Official of DOST & ITDI, and a good representation from the print and broadcast media.
The ITDI Portable Biogas Digester is an air-tight, oxygen free vessel, fed with organic materials where the microbial digestion takes place to produce the biogas. The major components of the digester are anaerobic ‘digester’, gas holder and effluent collection bin. Materials needed fro conversion to gas are kitchen wastes & animal manure blended with water.
This could very well address issues like escalating costs of fuel, specifically the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) & electricity. Gas produced could be an efficient fuel for cooking and lighting applications. The generators of this innovation technology/device have ‘christened’ the gas as EFA-gas as it is Environment Friendly & Affordable Sludge on the other hand, could be used as organic fertilizer or soil conditioner.

I believe in CME for use as biodiesel. However, while the cost of fossil fuel has been escalating and at the same time the price of copra and coconut is increasing as well, how does these two factors affect or influence the viability of CME?
