Guide to Tilapia Raising

May 30, 2008 by Leo   29,718 Views

Tilapia are sometimes known as “aquatic chicken”, due to their high growth rates, adaptability to a wide range of environmental conditions, ability to grow and reproduce in captivity and feed on low trophic levels. As a result, these fishes have become excellent candidates for aquaculture, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Indeed, tilapia culture has been expanding rapidly, and is now practiced in more than one hundred countries worldwide.

I’m planning to put up tilapia raising in tanks due to limited space. I just want to know if it is good to use water from deep well?

    • J.P. Baldia says:

      Hi Dennis:
You can certainly use deepwell water but it will be expensive to pump. Shallow well and surface water is more preferred.

        To: J. P. Baldia,

i contructed a 300 sq meter pond and watered by deepwell also. i stocked the pond last june with 6ooo all male tilapia fingerlings. as of this september 2009, most of the fish reached about 2 to 3 inches in length.i’m feeding them with commercially available fish food. i’m wondering if the fish has stunted growth. did i overstocked? please help. it’s supposed to be my pilot project and want to add two more ponds if this first one will become succesful. thank you very much.

  5. I have an inquiry regarding what I heard that a piggery on top of a tilapya pond is a good since the falling manure shall serve the feeds for the tilapia, how about that?

    • J.P. Baldia says:

      Hi Allen:
You can use dried hog manure to fertilize the pond in order to enhance the growth of natural food (phytoplankton and zooplankton) which are food to your tilapia. However, the amount is regulated to around 1,500kg manure per hectare. Excessive organic loading in your pond will cause low oxygen level in your water resulting to stunted growth of the fish. Oxygen is a function of metabolism. Low O2 means low metabolism of the fish.
