Pangasius Catfish, New Business Opportunities
October 11, 2007 by Leo 17,392 Views
Pioneer animal feeds firm Vitarich Corp. is taking the lead in locally culturing the fish Pangasius, also known as sutchi catfish or striped catfish, which may be the next generation fish in the country.
Originally cultured in Vietnam and Thailand, the Pangasius fish is in great demand in the United States, Europe, Russia and China with its fillet meat popular among high end restaurants worldwide.
The Pangasius presents new business opportunities in both local and export markets.
Known for its enormous size, the adult Pangasius can grow up to 130 centimeters or four feet in length and weigh up to 44 kilograms or 97 lbs.
“Pangasius is the next big thing for the local aquaculture industry,” according Vitarich chairman and president Rogelio Sarmiento.
“The entry of the Pangasius to our line of aqua products for export will strengthen our foothold in the global aquaculture market,” he added.
Vietnam’s Pangasius fish production is expected to reach one million metric tons this year.
“If we start culturing Pangasius here, we do not have to rely on imports to meet local market demand, and it will greatly boost our export markets,” he added.
“With the right amount and quality of feeds, and proper technical support which Vitarich offers, we can be able to compete globally,” assured Sarmiento.
Vitarich offers Pangasius fingerlings complete with feeds and technical support to ensure superior production.
Quick Facts
Care and feeding:
Since they are omnivorous, the Pangasius Catfish or Iridescent Shark Catfish will generally eat all kinds of live, fresh, and flake foods. To keep a good balance give them a high quality flake food or pellet everyday. Feed brine shrimp (either live or frozen) or blood worms. As they get older they loose their teeth, and like the Pacus, become more and more vegetarian.
Distribution:
The Pangasius Catfish or Iridescent Shark Catfish fish are found near Bangkok, Thailand. They have also been referred to as the Asian Shark Catfish in some earlier publications.
Size – Weight:
The Pangasius Catfish or Iridescent Shark Catfish get up to 39 inches (100 cm). Yes, over 3 feet long! There are other species of Pangasius that are sometimes sold as pangasius catfish, namely, Pangasius pangasius and Pangasius gigas that can reach 300 cm or 9 feet long!
Social Behaviors:
When they are young they like to school up, but will become more and more solitary as the get older. They are generally a good community fish and can be kept with most size tank-mates.
Sexual Differences:
Males are more slender than the females and have darker striping.
Acceptable Water Conditions:
Hardness: 2-20° dGH
Ph: 6.5 to 7.5
Temp: 72-79° F (22-26°C)
Breeding/Reproduction:
In Thailand, it is raised in ponds.
Interested parties who may want to breed Pangasius may call (02) 843-3033 or email Vitarich at iuc@2007.vitarich.com.

Dear All
(1)Sub: Culture of Pangas in low – high Salinity waters
Has any one cultured pangus (any one of the species) in higher salinity? if so what are the tolerant salinity levels, can commercial culture of Pangas be successfully carried out in say water with salinity levels of 5,10 or 15,20ppt?
which species is higher PPT tolerant? and commercially cultured and in which country?
(2)Sub; environmental risk assessment.
As you are aware we have been since quite some time studying into the possibilities of importing and starting Pangasius culture in Sindh Pakistan and are pleased to note that after a study some 5 years ago in the Philippines they found that it is “LOW RISK” to the environment in case it escaped to our
(a) our other connected production ponds where poly culture of India and Chinese carps Rahu, Thala, Mori,Grass carp, Silver carp and Common carp is being done.
(b)or our waterways and that pangasius will not mess up the balance of our Local species major carps i.e.Rahu, Thala, Mori and others sweet water fishes ?what are your views?
Which are the countries who have recently introduced the above fish besides Bangladesh? also where can i find (BFAR) Environmental Risk Assessment Study on the impact of Pangasius made 5 years ago? this study is very important to go through by all interested importers wanting to start Pangas commercial farming.
Did Bangladesh conduct a similar study?

Based on the study conducted by Anuar, H and A.Y. Nurulazneer of the Inst. Tropical Aquacul., Univ. of Malaysia entitled “Adaptability of Putin Bunga, Pangasius sutchi (=P. hypopthalmus) larvae and juveniles to brackishwater”, Pangasius larvae and juveniles can tolerate a maximum salinity of 8ppt.
Brackishwater has a salinity of over 20ppt.
The paper did not say if Pangasius will grow at this salinity because their experiment was limited to 48 hours salinity exposure.
does the protein content of the feeds fed to pangasius can affect its growth?
Ms. Rodelyn:
Definitely, the protein content of the feed is the most important among the different components of the feed. The growth of your fish (any fish for that matter) will depend on the protein content of the feed.
Any aquatic animal growth for this matter is affected by the protein content of the feed they are taking – There is an optimum range of protein requirement for each species. Also, the environmental conditions will affect the growth even though the feed contain an optimum level of protein.

We are looking into the possibility of importing 1,00,000 Pangas fry and starting Pangas culture in Sindh Pakistan. Kindly send us your quote FOB and CNF Karachi airport for the above quantity of fry – my initial questions are:
1. Which is the best and fast growing Pangas fry available? Which fish fry is better Tra, Basa or Succi?
2. As we need it to grow 1.5-2 kg in 6-8 months culture period and quantity to be stocked per acre 10,000, 15,000 or 20,000?
3. As feeding is most important and comes to app 70% of the culture cost – what is the best combination of farm made feed which we should use?
4. Is the fish carnivorous at any stage of growth?
5. Which is the safest – proven size of fry 1-2-3 inches suitable for importing – with minimum mortality.
6. How many fry in one oxygenated poly bag – how many poly bags in one carton, what will be the size and weight of the carton – for your information our farm is 3 hours from Karachi airport.
Hoping to receive your replies and quotation as soon as possible – we may have some further questions which we will send after receiving your initial replies.
Thanking you,

hellow.. im from davao city. is there any seminar that will be held that we can attend?? or where can we inquire here???
Pangasius is not an omnivore, they are carnivores! No wonder BFAR Region 4 has been feeding vegetables to their fish and they did not grow. This is a gross misinformation.
Correction: Region 2 pala ang nag-publish ng “cheaper feeds for pangasius”
Pangasius is omnivore. For sure they will eat soya bean meal and rice bran – and this are plant materials. I’ve work in an aquauclture company in Vietnam. Pangasius is all around us.
@Thuy:
First of all, eating does not necessarily mean that they are digested and assimilated.
It is true that soya and rice bran are plant materials but compared to other plant based feed ingredients, they are readily digestible because they do not contain cellulosic cell wall. This is the reason whey soya has been considered a good substitute for fish meal.
A true omnivore will will consume and digest both animal based protein and plant based (algae and higher plants) which contain cellulose because they produce cellulytic enzymes in their guts. Tilapia has this ability but sad to say, Pangasius do not have this capability.
Please review your Fish Physiology.

anyone interested in importing catfish feed from egypt
please visit our website
Dear Mr Karim,
We have a fish farm in Sindh Pakistan and have been thinking of importing Pangas fry – seed from a well reputed supplier, as you are aware in pangas culture high protein feed especially floating feed is necessary to get the required FCR within 6-9 months.
We are keen to know the various types of feed available – and what is available for pangas? is there successful pangas farming in Egypt? how many farms with what production per ha.
Do you all also have your own pangas demonstration ponds etc.
send us your quote with approx prices FOB and CNF Karachi of the above feed.
thanking you,

I just want to warn those who maybe interested in importing pangasius fingerlings from Thailand. Based on experience on imported fingerlings (or I call them post fry because they are hardly 3/4 of an inch when they arrived manila, their survival rates was only 5% and at best 10% when stocked in ponds and tanks after 2 weeks. Inquire from those who bought from Mr. Boy Tycangco, Vitarich and BlueBay.
Pangasius post fry are very sensitive to cannibalism and diseases at this stage of their growth. There was also an instance where the imported fingerlings had a red patch on the skull which is believed to to a viral infection. These stocks perished after one month of culture.
I suggest that you buy locally bred stocks that are at least 1.5-2 inches big. While they may cost a little more but the recovery rate can be as much as 100%.
Dear members that have bed experienced from imported P catfish from Thailand.
Pls advise the farms or sources that export to you.
Here in Thailand they’re many breeder’s farm that supply to local but most of them have non experienced to treat , quarantine live fish.
We’ve long experienced to supply our fingerlings to overseas such as Asia, Middle East, EU, USA. Live arrivel guarantee our Mono-sex tilapia, Pangasius catfish, Sea Bass, Red Pacu , etc.
Please feel free to contact us for discussion.

The consultant of A and L Fishpond and Hatchery who regularly imports pangasius fingerlings is a Thai whose name is Mr. Samruay Meenakarn-a. I heard that he holds a high position in Thailand Fishery Department/Ministry. Are you saying that he is inexperienced to treat and quarantine live fish?
Dear Josemari De Guzman,
Sorry for very late response.
The export live fish culture is special tactic and experienced to safe fish before packing and must best survival at destination.
Many breeders or middlemen try export but fail in packing / transport process. It seem simple but not and we also cooperate with fisheries here for asisted in transport fish for some sectors.
Good fish by poor treat / transport can kill both sides and we not do that. Please feel free to contact me for discussion in fish cuiture or others topics from Thailand.
