Importance of Landscaping

Landscaping is believed to have originated in China where the Chinese, hundreds of years before the birth of Christ, made gardens that were called Zen. The first Zen gardens were large that, aside from plants, had artificial mountains and even lakes.

As time went by, Zen gardens became smaller. Instead of artificial mountains, Chinese landscapers, used stones. Instead of lakes, they created small ponds. Other early civilizations, like the Japanese and Romans, had their own landscaping designs.

Today, any method of beautifying the surroundings, either done outside or inside a building, is considered landscaping.

Beautification is not the sole objective of landscaping. It also aims to fully utilize land in a beautiful way. Landscaping also enhances the design of building and the ambiance of a place. It is also used to preserve and conserve the environment. For example, ponds are used as sanctuaries for birds, and gardens for butterflies. Landscaping integrates the natural beauty of plants and trees with buildings and other sanctuaries.

There are two kinds of landscapers; the landscape artist or hobbyist and the landscape architect. The former learns landscaping through self-study or may have been trained by an expert landscape artist or horticulturist. He possesses and develops through training and experience a talent in creating attractive scenery. The landscape architect on the other hand, studied landscaping as a course in college. The landscape artist’s capability is used in projects like house gardens, and for big projects managed by professionals. The landscape artist can handle both small-scale and large-scale projects – small gardens or projects like parks, golf courses, resorts, commercial centers and hotels.

There are more business opportunities now in landscaping because of its importance in providing balance and beauty to a building’s design, particularly in highly urbanized areas. Even high rises resort to indoor landscaping to provide a breathing space or greenery to the largely cement and steel structures.

A parallel business to providing landscaping services, is an enterprise that deals with maintaining and renting of ornamental plants to landscape artists and architects.

A successful landscaper must:

  1. Be persuasive and convincing.
  2. Be knowledgeable and updated in the latest developments in all aspects of landscaping to get the trust of his client.
  3. Know how to give joy to his client.
  4. Know how to upgrade his knowledge and adapt to developments in the industry. Successful landscapers must constantly upgrade their know-how by training and attending seminars where they can update their knowledge on the various aspects of and developments in landscaping.
