Encapsulated items are ideal as souvenirs and corporate give-aways. They are easy to make and raw materials are readily available.
Tools and Materials:
- 30g pre-mixed resin
- 1.5g black toner
- 60g clear cast resin
- modeling clay
- 5g mold way or floor wax
- 0.9g imported MEKP hardener
- glass base
- disposable mixing cup
- stirring rod
- gold medal leaf for encapsulation (should be smaller than the frame)
- 2″ x 3″ aluminum frame
- Black sandpaper (#’s 150,300, 600, 1000)
- 3g polishing compound or finishing wax
Reminder: Clear cast resin will retain its clarity only with imported MEKP or hardener. Excessive amount of hardener in clear cast pre-mixed resin makes the finished product yellow and sensitive to cracking.
Procedure:
- Wax the glass base and the aluminum frame with mold wax or floor wax. This is done for ease in removing the finished product. Buff until glossy.
- Place the aluminum frame in the middle of the glass base.
- Wrap a clay coil around the aluminum frame. This acts as a “seal” to the glass base and prevents the resin from seeping under the frame.
- Meanwhile, mix up to 2.5g black toner or dye into the pre-mixed resin. Stir until the color is uniformly black.
- Mix 0.5g hardener into the dyed pre-mixed resin.
- Pour the mixture into the aluminum frame.
- When the resin is tacky, put the gold leaf on the black resin base.
- Mix 1g imported hardener with 100g clear cast pre-mixed resin.
- Pour unto the black resin with gold leaf. Wait until the resin is cured.
- To remove encapsulated item, tap sides of the frame.
- The finished product will have an uneven surface. Use a coarse sandpaper #150, 300, 600 and gradually working to a #1000 with set sanding to even out the product.
- Wipe the finished product to dry.
- Buff with polishing compound or finishing wax for better result.

Assuming that you can make 8 pieces of encapsulated product in one day, you can make 178 pcs in a month of 22 days. For a period of 6 months, which is equivalent to the life of some material used in making encapsulated product, you can make 1,056 pieces.
Unit cost: P 46.65
Suggested selling price:
- P 46.65 x 20% markup = P 55.98
- x 25% markup = 58.31
- x 30% markup = 60.64
STAINED GLASS

We usually marvel the beauty of church windows with its stained glass depiction of various saints. We often wonder if we could do the same with our windows or make our own designs with stained glass. In this activity, we will show how easy it is to make your own stained glass.
Tools and Materials:
- cellophane sheet
- about 375g pre-mixed resin
- about 200g pre-mixed clear cast resin for coloring
- 125g chopped strand fiberglass mat #230 or 300
- 7.5g hardener for the pre-mixed resin
- 5g each toner or dyes (yellow, orange, green)
- disposable mixing cups
- disposable stirring rods
- 5″ x 9″ flat metal bar frame (1/16″ thickness x 182″ width x 20′ length)
- 4g hardener for the clear cast resin to be used for dyeing
- scissors
- sandpaper
Reminder: The amount of pre-mixed resin to be used depends on the desired size of the frame model. Just follow this proportion in estimating the mixture: 3 parts pre-mixed resin : 1 part chopped strand fiberglass mat. Hardener is 2% of the resin weight.
Procedure:
- Shape the flat metal bar into a flower. Make sure that the segments are closed to avoid seeping or dyed resin later into each segment.
- Meanwhile, cut a cellophane sheet larger than the metal-framed flower design for stained glass. Crumple and then spread the cellophane sheet. You may also leave the cellophane flat, which will not give a crumpled texture.
- In a disposable cup, mix 7.5g hardener into 300g pre-mixed resin. Stir.
- Lay flat the chopped strained fiberglass mat into the spread cellophane sheet. Pour the resin on top of the fiberglass. Spread evenly with the stirrer.
- Once the fiberglass has been properly saturated with resin (the fiberglass becomes translucent), lay the flower frame unto the wet fiberglass mat. Place a weight on the frame to keep the cellophane flat. Let resin dry for 15-20 minutes.
- In separate disposable cups, mix the dyes with pre-mixed resin. (Estimate the distribution of the mixture depending on the design.)
- Mix a total of 4g hardener o the dyed resin and pour into each mold or segment of the flower frame. Allow to cure.
- Peel/tear the cellophane after the resin has fully cured, cut the excess fiberglass mat. Sand the rough edges of the stained glass. You now have your stained glass flower decor.
Reminder: Mix dyes thoroughly into resin before mixing the MEKP hardener which can be bleach colors. Take note of your formulation in blending colors for consistency.
