Virgin Coconut Oil can be produced by two common methods:

1. Heated (Hot Methods) processes.

2. Non-Heated (Cold Methods) processes.

Hot methods apply extreme pressure or high heat to extract the oil from the nut. Cold methods obtain oil without applying heat or pressing the coconut meat mechanically, hence the more common term “cold pressed”. While many Virgin Coconut Oil found in the market claim to be cold pressed, the oil you buy may have been heated after extraction to hasten the lowering of the moisture (water) content.

How To Make Your Own Cold Pressed Virgin Coconut Oil

  1. Select only fresh and mature quality coconuts.
  2. Split coconuts and collect coconut water.
  3. Grate coconuts and collect coconut meat.
  4. Bag the coconut meat. Use white nylon mesh bag.
  5. Place bag in a Cold Press machine. At home, you can hand press using gloves. Collect coconut milk.
  6. Soak the pressed bag in coconut water and press for a second time. Collect more coconut milk.
  7. Allow the coconut milk to settle undisturbed in a cabinet at 32degC for 10-17 hours. Coconut oil will naturally separate from water and proteins.
  8. Carefully collect and filter the oil and avoid mixing with the bottom water layer. The oil is colorless.

While virgin coconut oil has been documented to help alleviate, ease, protect against and even cure many ailments, it is still vital that the individual maintain a healthy lifestyle, exercise regularly, eat a balance diet of the right kind of food, and drink lots of water.

sundried coconut kernels are what we call “copra”…It is a huge industry here in our country…Giant manufacturing companies obtain copra oil to produce rediculous amounts of bath soaps and other personal care products…Copra oil is “plain” coconut oil…the difference between the two is the fact that virgin coconut oil is extracted without the use of heat, solvent or bleach, hence the word “virgin”…copra oil or plain coconut oil is obtained by, well, sundrying the coconut meat…Although both variations of coconut oil contains high amounts of lauric acid (which when ingested helps to strenthen the immune system against, especially viral, infections and helps increase metabolism to reduce body weight) virgin coconut oil is believed to contain higher amounts of nutrients as compared to plain coconut oil…the reason behind it is because some nutrients are lost by heating, adding solvents or bleaching, coconut oil…but i have’nt yet confirmed this notion…in any case, science has already proven that coconut oil, virgin or plain, is beneficial to human health whether through ingestion or topical administration.

      dear Star-queen,

Please let me educate yourself a bit: copra is most often produced not by sun drying but by heating ovens (large scale). Also one major point you should know is that the difference between virgin and “plain” coconut oil is the fact that virgin oil is from fresh nuts (NOT dryed copra), while “plain” or commercial coco oil is from copra (there is no coco milk involved either, since the oil cake (the pulp after pressing) has no coco meat mixed with the oil. Virgin oil has no added chemicals and has not been extracted in heat-creating high pressure machines (pressure creates heat). Virgin opil should have a slight coco taste, if not, it has been tinkert with using chemicals and in my view is bad!

I hope that there will be many more good people involved in the futurein the making of the Philippines super product: Real Virgin Coconut Oil!!!

I tried Cold Press method similar to what you recommend, except I leaved the express milk in the kitchen with room temperature about 28 degree Celsius. After about 6 hours,I can see a little bit of layer of clear oil in between the coconut water (bottom) and solid (upper). The solid started to ferment and produce bubble. I gently moved the container a side, and the clear oil mix again. Then, after 12 hours, no sign of the clear oil reappear, similarily after overnight (24 hours). I used 10 coconut flesh and water, keep in the 20×20x15cm container, and the clear oil is only 1cm thick? The extraction is failed. Any comment?

  3. Thank you for the wonderful information. I want to ask how to use coconut as mouth wash and other disease stated above . Is it the raw coconut or it should be prepared in some way . Please educate me on that .
    Thank you.

The age old method of oil extraction in Kerala, is to split the coconut, sundry the kernel, remove the dried flesh from the shell and press them in wooden mill (chakku) to extract the oil. Is this not virgin oil. What way this oil is different from that obtained by process of extracting the milk and sparating the oil.
