Tricycle, Jeepney, Taxi and FX Operation

This kind of business is one of the easiest to setup. You only need to (1) purchase the vehicle, (2) register, and (3) get a franchise from LTFRB, and you’re off. You can also (4) apply for “drivers and operators association” membership. Well, the purchasing part isn’t that easy though, because you have to contemplate on whether buying a second hand is practical thing than brand new. Let me give you some idea so you can weigh the pros and cons.
Second hand
Pros:
- It’s a lot cheaper
- You can even get a free line franchise on the package price
- If you’re lucky, you can get the new registration and insurance for free.
- Negotiable – you can haggle with the vendor on the lowest possible price.
- Hey, why not include that nice stereo in the package?!
Cons:
- Some parts needs to be fixed or changed before you can use it
- Operation maintenance is high
- Depreciation cost is high
- Will only be operational for a few more years.
Brand new
Pros:
- Sparkingly beautiful and smells fresh!
- Almost maintenance free for at least 2 years.
- Depreciation cost is low.
- Will still be in top shape (with good maintenance) for the next 6 years.
Cons:
- Expensive
- Additional cost for registration and insurance.
- Additional cost for franchise application at LTFRB.
- Additional cost for taxi meter.
- Additional cost for association memberships (TODA, PISTON, etc.).
- Prone to carnappers.
It is always a good idea to drive the vehicle yourself for maximum ROI. If you don’t know how to drive, look for a trusted driver. More advice from Reyna Elena.

about taxi franchise, nag-apply ako last march pa. and still for hearing pa daw.

this is an awesome site for inquiry!!! magtatanong lang po kung magkano po ang second hand na jeepney? gagamitin po sa negosyo di po pampasada. at halimbawa po nakabili ako ng jeepney sa manila or any other cities but i lived in Mindanao possible po ba na matransport ang jeepney to Mindanao without any hassles? ano po ang maipapayo nyo and what would be my next move? thank you in advance.
@gel, ito ang mga sources for buying a second hand jeepney, online: sulit.com.ph, car.finder.ph, http://www.adpost.com/ph/, offline: buy&sell newspaper or carfinder magazine. transporting it to mindanao is easy though quite expensive, a container van will be provided by the shipping lines. not sure if you still need clearance from LTO though, just inquire.
plano po naming kumuha ng brand new na vios para gawing taxi, dami nagbebenta ng franchise worth 70K, worth it kaya ito? sabi din daw, ir order to get a franchise nowadays from LTFRB, kailangan daw min of 10 units na, so i was thinking, sa mga gustong kumuha ng franchise na nagdadalawang isip kasi mahal, what if we make a group of 10 para paghati-hatian natin yung franchise para nakatipid na tayo, bago pa.
me plano akong bilhing taxi metered franchise na nag expired na last december 2008. pwede bang i renew ito? me bago akong vios na planong ikabit dito. paano ba yung process?
@ann, subukan mo nag search sa sulit.com.ph for second hand or brand new tricycles, or in-print like buy&sell ads paper.
Hi. For a beginner who is risk averse, is it ok to try tricycle business? is the boundary rate per day that you posted still applicable today? can you help me do the math – initial investment, costs involved per day or per month (gasoline, maintenance, depreciation costs, etc)- so I can at least know whether i will truly have a profit or it is worth investing of my little money. thanks so much
Hi,
Maida et all
Tricycle operator ako dati and also a driver, dun sa toda namin sa valenzuela ang membership ay base sa linya mong nabili sa ngaun ang bilihan ng linya ay 80T para ka makabiyahe then motorcycle 80 T +sidecar 20T +membership ng driver 10T kaya total investments mo ay 190 T tapos ang ROI mo lang per day ay 120 pesos per day bale 4 years bago mo mabawi ang investments mo.But if you are the driver kaya mong kumita ng 500 pesos per day depende sa biyahe mo more or less.which can support the daily needs of a family with 2 children.
Hope this data will help a lot.
Thanks,
erik
@erik, salamat sa additional info.
Hi,
I have a daughter who walks to her school… and this is quite taxing for her. So, we were thinking of getting a tricycle which will bring her to her school. Then, we realized, why not 2 units to start a business, or maybe applying for a franchise.
thanks, lali
@lalie, get a uniT from authorized motorcycle dealers (motortrade, k-cycles, etc.). most of them offer installment basis. sidecar not included, though there are several shops that offer sidecar installation for additional 5-10k. prepare at least 70k for a single unit (cash basis). regarding franchise, as far as i know, registration is under the local municipal office.
@harry gabrieles, try mo mag search ng jeepneys for sale dito:
