Junkshop is considered by many as a dirty business, I mean it literally, but this is a lucrative business that generates a lot of money both for garbage collectors and junkshop owners.

Things you might need:

  1. Weighing scale is the most important equipment since you are buying all the scrap materials per kilo, except for glass bottles which is paid by piece.
  2. Kariton – maybe you can start with at least 3 then hire some tambay at your neighboor to collect and buy the scrap from house to house.
  3. An open space – to dump all your scrap materials.
  4. List of recycling centers that will collect your scraps. Transactions will usually take weekly or monthly, depending on the amount of scraps that you collected.
  5. Delivery truck – if you plan to collect scraps from neighbooring provinces.

“..The prices of recyclables sold ranged from a low of P.50 per kilo for paper, plastics and cardboards, to as high as P275 for used batteries of vehicles. Used tires with nylon fabric would fetch from P5 to P35 a piece. Materials made of aluminum like soft drink cans, food trays, window frames also sold at P30 to P33 per kilo while metals like copper, zinc and ordinary scrap metals earned from P80 to P90 per kilo.

Plastics, particularly high and low density polyethylene, such as pails, trays, crates, shipping containers, industrial parts, plastic retail bags and garbage bags, sold for P2 to P3.50 per kilo. Polypropylene plastics or materials found in carpet fibers, films, bags, car bumpers, microwave containers beverage cups and toys fetched P3 to P3.50 per kilo…” source: MindaNews

thank you so much for any reply or comment!

You can start by making inquiries from the recyling center list that I posted. They are more experienced and updated on the latest trends about recycling/junkshop business. You might even get the pricelist and types of recycling materials to trade with them.

You’re a bit lucky since your boss is into the same business, and he’s encouraging you to go into it as well. That’s means you can have all the advice you can get from him firsthand!

Goodluck on your business and regards.

Hi..Would like to ask some info.. Actually my mother already started her junk shop way back 2004 (as far as I remember). Until now she is still delivering the items to a second party dealer, thus reducing her profit. Now I had given the list of BIGGER players for this business but she wants to know how much is the least quantity they require (bulk selling). One more thing, is there a standard pricing of these materials, say plastics = Php/kl, carton = Php/kl or is it the marketing strategy of the shop owner? I’m working on a company here in Laguna and I’m thinking of getting into this business. Any information / tips will be very much appreciated…

    menmen Says: 7/05/2007 01:35:00 PM

hi! Dami din pala interested magput-up ng scrap business. I’ll share some info, baguhan pa lang kasi ako sa ganitong business, as in mini-junkshop lang po iyong pinu-put up ko.

Regarding sa capital, well, depende sa inyo iyon. You have to think kung anong klase ng scrap ang icocollect mo: scrap metals, scrap plastic, scrap paper, or bottles. Pag scrap paper, siyempre kelangan bodega mo may bubong (esp now tag-ulan/typhoon months). Pwede na mag-start ng P10,000. You have to have your own timbangan, at least 60 kilos which is i think aroung P2,000.

Scrap metals include copper, dilaw, radiator, condenser, aluminum, stainless, beverage cans, caps, kaldero, zinc, lead, bakal, yero, lata/tansan.

Scrap plastics include: PET bottles (mineral bottle), and sibak (plastic ng alcohol, shampoo, lotion, ketchup etc).

Scrap paper – karton, newspaper, white paper (bond paper, computer paper…anything basta white paper).

Bote: gin roundpost, gin 4×4, angelito, catsup, lapad, longneck na emperador/tanduay, gsm long neck, gsm solo.

    Scrap batteries: 1sm, 2sm, 3sm, 6sm, 2d, 4d, 8d, snf.

Iyong price depende sa location eh. Sa amin kasi province kaya mas mababa compared sa manila. Sa PET bottles for example, ang bilihan d2 sa amin is P8/kilo then pag ipapasa sa junkshop around P12/kilo. May gain ka na P4/kilo. Sa bakal naman for example, bili mo is P9/kilo, then pag ipapasa mo sa junkshop, around P12/kilo.

Hello to all. Im new here, was browsing and looking for a possible business which I could start. Im from pangasinan but currently based in manila because of work.I have a modest vacant lot in the province at hindi ko alam kung ano ang gagawin. I thought of piggery or poultry pero hindi pwede kasi residential yung area. Maraming Salamat.

Nagrelease n sila ng courses for October(http://www.tlrc.gov.ph/training.html) kaso walang sched for junkshop. Email me at jeffresano@yahoo.com.

Kabuhayan Card is 100 pesos, yung pdf file ay 30 pesos for download. Eto yung content:
    I Relevance of Business; II Registration and Permits; III Capitalization; IV Location/Site of the Business;
V Manpower and Equipment; VI Systematic Operation of the Business; VII Items/Materials for recycling
