Sir Leo,

Pwede nyo po ba ako bigyan ng complete information about molting?

We bought 700 birds last March and the supplier said hindi na daw po sila maglulugon kc bata pa daw po, baka daw next year na. Sabi po ng brother ko, di daw po sya sure if totoo yon. Sabi rin po nya, every year daw mo naglulugon from August to Sept.

Base po sa experience nyo, are our ducks likely to undergo lugon this August to September? They are into 80% production now, if magmo-molt po sila this August, that would mean kailangan na naman naming i-shoulder o abunohan yong para sa feeds nila for the lugon months... medyo masakit na po sa bulsa hehehe.

@richard, to answer your questions briefly:
1. depends on how many heads you will raise. prepare at least P300,000 for 1,000 heads (@140 each, +feeds+cage+others)
2. 1,000 is fine, but if you have more budget 2,000 is recommended for beginners.
3. the area should be least 1000sqm and should be far away from the neighbors.
4. if you want to produce eggs right away, buy ready-to-lay ducks (4-5 months @140each), but make sure you get your itik from honest hatcheries.
5. don't buy ducks that was previously molted, it will lay eggs alright but the rate is maybe 50-60% only.

my reply to john, though a little bit late but i still hope your still in the industry. the ideal ratio of duck to drake is 1:10 one male per 10 female. you should not exceed this ratio it will put a lot of stress to your laying ducks. if your male ducks are of the same age you can still bring it down to 6 drakes for every 100 ducks or female.

feeds will help you a lot in maintaining your egg production. your feed support is essential during the peaks of egg laying. if your ducks are healthy or has a good fat level it will consume less feeds because when they are ful they stop eating that the good nature of our ducks.

you can e-mail me for any queries on this matter.
